Hungarian GP: Norris’ Comments Backfire – Sainz Reacts
Sainz Defends Norris’s Openness Amidst Criticism: “A Bit Sad”
Carlos Sainz has spoken out in defence of Lando Norris’s candid admissions of self-doubt and errors this season, labeling the criticism the McLaren driver has faced as “a bit sad.” Sainz believes Norris’s honesty is a rare and valuable trait in formula 1,suggesting that many other drivers share similar internal struggles but choose to keep them private.
sainz Praises Norris’s Authenticity
The Spanish driver, speaking ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, highlighted the irony of Norris being criticized for his genuine feelings and thoughts. “He is probably the only guy being 100% genuine on his feelings and the way he thinks but then people are going back at him,” Sainz remarked. He elaborated that the 19 other drivers on the grid likely experience comparable levels of doubt and self-criticism, but they opt to withhold these sentiments from the media. “They just don’t explain it out loud because we prefer to keep it inside and not say it to the media,” Sainz added.
Norris himself has been open about mistakes made during the current season that have cost him valuable points. Earlier in the year, he struggled with a lack of feedback from the front axle of his McLaren, making it challenging to anticipate the car’s behavior at the limit. McLaren has as implemented a front suspension upgrade, which has reportedly improved Norris’s comfort and confidence since the Canadian Grand Prix in June.
Despite these improvements, Norris experienced difficulties in qualifying in Canada, starting sixth. The race itself saw him crash into teammate Oscar Piastri following a misjudgment. Though, his season has also featured meaningful successes, including a win in Austria and inheriting victory at the British Grand Prix after Piastri received a penalty. Last weekend in belgium, Norris secured pole position but was overtaken by Piastri on the opening lap, with his teammate going on to win.
Norris’s Championship Prospects: Talent Meets Fortune
Norris currently sits 16 points behind Piastri in the driver standings as the Formula 1 season heads into its summer break. Sainz, when asked about Norris’s potential to challenge for the championship this year, expressed strong confidence in his talent. “If I base my decision on speed and talent, I’m 100% sure he has that to win a World Championship,” Sainz stated.
Though, he also acknowledged the multifaceted nature of Formula 1 success, which extends beyond raw ability. “But F1 also involves a bit of luck, mental resilience, being at home with a car in the right times,” he explained. Sainz emphasized that even if Norris doesn’t clinch the title this year, his future remains luminous.”It doesn’t really matter if he doesn’t win this year, he’ll get another chance. He has 10-15 years in F1. He has the potential, talent and speed,” Sainz concluded.”If he gets it this year, great I’ll be happy for him. If not,he might get his chance later.”
Norris’s performance in Friday practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix saw him set the fastest lap, a significant 0.291 seconds ahead of his teammate Piastri, indicating his continued pace and potential.
