Hungarians are voting on April 12, 2026, in a pivotal parliamentary election that could end the 16-year rule of populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The election represents a significant challenge to Orbán, who has held office since 2010 and is currently seeking a fifth term.

The primary challenger to Orbán is Péter Magyar, the leader of the opposition Tisza party. Magyar, a former ally of the ruling Fidesz party, has emerged as the most substantial threat to Orbán’s grip on power. Most opinion polls leading up to the vote have shown Magyar’s Tisza party trailing ahead of Fidesz.

A Promise of Regime Change

The European Parliament has previously described the governance of Viktor Orbán as a hybrid regime of electoral autocracy. In response to this climate, Péter Magyar and the Tisza party are campaigning on a platform of a change of regime.

Magyar’s platform includes a reset of Hungary’s relations with the European Union and an end to the country’s close ties with Russia. During his final campaign rally in Debrecen on April 11, 2026, Magyar attracted larger crowds than Orbán’s final rally in the capital city of Budapest.

Ahead of the vote, Magyar appealed to voters to resist Fidesz pressure and blackmail and urged them not to be tempted to commit electoral fraud.

Orbán’s Campaign and Rhetoric

Viktor Orbán remained defiant during his closing campaign rally in Budapest on April 11, 2026. Addressing several thousand supporters on Castle Hill, Orbán claimed his party would achieve a victory that would surprise everyone, perhaps even ourselves.

The Fidesz leader focused his final appeals on targeting Brussels and Ukraine. During his speech, Orbán stated:

We don’t give our children, we don’t give our weapons and we don’t give our money

Orbán also increased tensions leading up to the election by claiming that the opposition would stop at nothing to seize power.

International Stakes and US Influence

The outcome of the election is being watched closely by international observers due to its potential repercussions for the United States, Russia, and the European Union. Orbán has positioned himself as MAGA’s man in Europe and has maintained a close relationship with US President Donald Trump.

President Trump endorsed Orbán via his Truth Social platform, writing in all caps that Hungarians should get out and vote for his true friend, fighter, and WINNER.

Analysts suggest the result will indicate whether Trump’s endorsement can influence Hungarian voters and if it supports a broader international far-right project. Orbán has previously been critical of the European Union and has blocked significant European aid to Ukraine.

Election Logistics

Polls across Hungary opened at 6 a.m. On April 12, 2026. Voting is scheduled to continue until 19:00 (17:00 GMT), with results expected to begin arriving throughout the evening.
