Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in the national election held on April 12, 2026, ending 16 years of continuous leadership. The victory belongs to opposition leader Péter Magyar and his pro-European conservative TISZA party, a result that is expected to significantly alter Hungary’s relationship with the European Union and its international allies.
Orbán, the longest-serving leader in the European Union and a known ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, acknowledged the loss on the night of April 12. He described the outcome as painful
and unambiguous
while addressing supporters in Budapest.
I congratulated the victorious party. We are going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well.

Election Results and Parliamentary Shift
Partial results released shortly after the polls closed showed a dominant performance by the TISZA party. With 77% of the vote counted, Magyar’s party held more than 53% support, compared to 38% for Orbán’s governing Fidesz party. As the count progressed to 93%, TISZA maintained more than 53% support against 37% for Fidesz.
The shift in parliamentary power is substantial. With 98.74% of the vote counted, the TISZA party was projected to win 138 of the 199 seats in the Hungarian parliament. This constitutes a super-majority, which provides the legal capacity to amend the constitution and key laws. Fidesz won 55 seats, while the extreme-right Mi Hazánk party secured six seats.
The election saw a massive turnout, with Péter Magyar stating that up to 6 million people voted in a country with a population of slightly over 9 million.
The Rise of Péter Magyar
Péter Magyar, a former loyalist to Orbán, campaigned on a platform focused on combating corruption and improving essential public services, including health care and public transport. His victory is viewed as a rejection of the authoritarian policies associated with the previous administration.
Following the announcement, crowds gathered near the Danube River and the Parliament building in Budapest to celebrate. Magyar expressed cautious optimism during the counting process, noting that his team had received thousands of reports regarding election tampering.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just congratulated me on the phone on our victory

International Implications
The election result is expected to have repercussions beyond Hungary’s borders. Magyar has pledged to rebuild the ties between Hungary and the European Union as well as NATO, relationships that had become strained under Orbán’s leadership.
Analysts suggest that the TISZA party’s super-majority may allow the new government to reverse specific legal and constitutional changes implemented by Fidesz. This shift is seen as a potential catalyst for unlocking EU funds that had previously been withheld from Hungary.
European leaders quickly offered congratulations to Magyar, while the result is anticipated to impact the White House given Orbán’s longstanding alliance with Donald Trump.
