Reds’ Hunter Greene Faces MRI⁣ After Groin Issue

‌ Updated June 04, 2025
⁢

Cincinnati Hunter ‌Greene, the Reds’ star pitcher, is scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday morning to assess discomfort in his right groin. The decision follows his early exit, after five innings, from Tuesday night’s game against⁢ the Milwaukee Brewers. This latest groin issue for Greene, ⁤a key ‍player in Cincinnati’s MLB season, raises concerns about his availability.

Reds manager Terry Francona noted that Greene reported ⁣feeling the discomfort late in the fifth inning of their 4-2 victory. Greene had only recently returned from a 15-day injured list stint due to a ‍similar groin strain suffered in early May. He alerted the athletic trainer during‌ his warm-up before the fourth inning on Tuesday.

“It’s ⁤not as‌ bad (as what he felt in Atlanta) but it still grabbed,” Greene said.He expressed frustration, emphasizing his desire to consistently compete. “It’s not⁢ concerning,it’s frustrating. I want to‍ be out there and compete…‍ It just makes ‍it a little bit ⁣more challenging when ⁣you’re trying to overcome some⁤ stuff.”

Greene, a first-time All-Star‌ last season, holds ‌a 4-3 record with a 2.72 ‌ERA across 11⁤ starts this year. Against the brewers, the 25-year-old allowed two runs on five ⁢hits, walking three and‍ striking out seven.

Notably, Greene threw first-pitch strikes to all 23 Milwaukee batters he faced.According to Sportradar, this achievement puts him in‍ rare⁢ company. Since tracking began in 2000, only Michael Fulmer of Detroit, in a⁢ 2017 game against Minnesota, has matched ⁣this 100% ⁢first-strike rate when facing at least 23 batters.

“I wish I could have finished ‌some guys a little bit more. I’ve faced these guys so many times,” said Greene, who made‍ his seventh start against the Brewers. “I still made some really good ‌pitches, and then they ⁤hit it. It’s probably because they’ve⁣ seen ⁢it a million times, but that’s the competitive part of ‌the game and you’ve got‌ to embrace that.”

What’s next

The ⁣results of ‌Wednesday’s⁣ MRI will determine the extent of Greene’s injury and his availability moving forward. ‍The Reds will be closely⁣ monitoring his ‌condition as they ‍continue ‌their ‌season.
