Hurricane Isaias poses a severe threat to the northern Gulf Coast with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour as a Category 2 storm, approaching land in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida after becoming the latest-forming first Atlantic hurricane in 121 years according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data reported by CBS News. CBS News reported that the storm’s core sat roughly 230 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River, traveling north-northeast at 14 mph.
Hurricane Warnings and Evacuations Along the Gulf Coast
A hurricane warning covers the northern coastline from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay and Gulf County Line in Florida. CBS News noted that additional strengthening could push Isaias into a major hurricane with winds of 111 mph or greater before landfall. Mandatory evacuations took effect in parts of Florida’s Okaloosa and Walton counties, while officials in Gulf Shores, Alabama, urged non-residents to leave to reduce congestion and protect vulnerable populations. Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier told CBS News that his main concern involved residents delaying their departure until emergency responders could no longer reach them safely.
States of Emergency Declared Across Multiple States
Governors in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia declared states of emergency ahead of the impact. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis placed more than two dozen counties under emergency orders during a Thursday news conference reported by CBS News. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued an emergency declaration covering 40 counties and announced that government buildings in nine counties would close on Friday. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also instituted an emergency declaration for his state.
Rainfall and Tornado Threats Span the Southeast
Forecasters predict 4 to 8 inches of rain, with isolated totals reaching 15 inches from southern Alabama across the Florida Panhandle and into Florida’s Big Bend. Heavy rainfall will also affect the wider Southeast, the Tennessee Valley, and the Carolinas. Tornado risks will emerge in coastal Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and southwest Georgia, persisting through Saturday into eastern Alabama and Georgia. Gov. DeSantis warned residents that tornadoes can strike far outside the storm’s primary cone.

Landfall Expected Friday Night or Saturday Morning
The National Hurricane Center expects Isaias to make landfall within the warning area along the northern Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday. The U.S. Coast Guard urged mariners in the Gulf to monitor updates and remain vigilant as the storm approaches. CBS News reported that preparations against storm surge and damaging winds must be rushed to completion immediately.
