In the Dominican republic, nearly 200 homes sustained damage, and the entire water system was disrupted, leading to widespread supply shortages. The storm also caused damage to infrastructure, including trees and traffic lights, resulting in landslides and the isolation of communities due to floodwaters.
Jamaica Prepares for Impact
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has urged citizens to take the threat seriously and seek shelter. Over 650 shelters have been established across the country, equipped with food packages and essential supplies. “I urge Jamaicans to take this weather threat seriously,” Holness stated. “Take all measures to protect yourself. So I woudl urge all my fellow citizens, everyone who is now feeling nervous, anxious, uncertain, that now is the time to be prepared.”

Long-Term Considerations and Recovery
The aftermath of Hurricane melissa is expected to present significant challenges for the affected regions. Beyond the immediate needs of shelter, food, and water, long-term recovery efforts will focus on rebuilding infrastructure, restoring essential services, and addressing the economic impact of the storm. The potential for waterborne diseases and other health risks will require ongoing monitoring and preventative measures.
Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of hurricanes in the Atlantic basin. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that rising sea temperatures contribute to stronger storms and heavier rainfall, exacerbating the impacts of these events on vulnerable communities.
