Brian Hooker, a 59-year-old U.S. Citizen, has been arrested by the Royal Bahamas Police Force in connection with the disappearance of his wife, Lynette Hooker, 55, during a boating trip in the Abaco Islands.
The arrest occurred shortly after 7 p.m. On April 8, 2026, in the town of Marsh Harbour. The disappearance of Lynette Hooker, a resident of Michigan, has prompted a joint international effort, with the U.S. Coast Guard launching a criminal investigation and taking the lead on investigative efforts in coordination with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Details of the Disappearance
According to reports from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Brian Hooker stated that he and his wife were traveling in an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy from Hope Town to Elbow Cay on the night of April 4, 2026. He told authorities that rough seas caused Lynette to fall overboard, and that she took the keys to the boat with her, which caused the engine to shut off.
Hooker claimed that strong currents carried his wife out to sea and that he lost sight of her. He reported that he spent several hours paddling the dinghy to shore, eventually arriving at the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard at 4 a.m. On April 5, 2026. Officials stated that Lynette Hooker was wearing a black bathing suit at the time of her disappearance.
The Royal Bahamian Defense Force has since transitioned the search for Lynette Hooker near Elbow Cay into a search and recovery operation.
Investigation and Family Concerns
The U.S. Coast Guard’s Criminal Investigative Service is handling the case, as it involves crimes on U.S.-flagged vessels in international waters. The investigation is currently in its early stages.
Karli Aylesworth, the daughter of Lynette Hooker, has expressed skepticism regarding the account provided by her father, stating it seemed unlikely that her mother would just fall
overboard.
A 2015 police report from Kentwood, Michigan, indicates a prior domestic incident involving the couple that ended with Lynette Hooker’s arrest. Aylesworth has described the relationship between her parents as volatile, noting that the couple gave sharply different accounts of that event more than a decade ago.
Legal Defense and Arrest Allegations
Terrel A. Butler, the Bahamas-based attorney representing Brian Hooker, stated that his client denies any wrongdoing and has been cooperating with the relevant authorities during the ongoing investigation.

Terrel A. Butler

and alleged that Brian Hooker was injured during the process of being taken into custody. According to Butler, Hooker claims that while he was being handcuffed and holding a change of clothes while following an officer’s instructions, he fell overboard as he was being taken to his vessel, the Soul Mate
. Butler stated that Hooker had to be rescued from the water and sustained an injury to his knee during the ordeal.
