Lane Hutson, the Montreal Canadiens’ standout defenseman, has been awarded the Calder Trophy following an exceptional rookie season. Hutson’s impressive play and dedication quickly made him a key player for the team, earning him widespread recognition across the NHL.
The young defenseman tied Larry Murphy for the most assists (60) in a season by a rookie defenseman. His total of 66 points placed him among the highest-scoring rookie defensemen in NHL history, surpassed only by Murphy, Gary Suter, and Brian Leetch. Hutson’s achievements surpassed those of Hall of Famers like nick Lidstrom and ray Bourque.
Hutson’s success wasn’t solely based on highlight-reel plays.His relentless work ethic and passion for the game set him apart. Selected 62nd overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, Hutson quickly proved his potential. After a successful stint at Boston University,where he scored 30 goals and 97 points,he signed with the Canadiens. He debuted with the team on April 15, 2024, against the Detroit Red Wings, recording his first assist.
Coach Martin St. Louis praised Hutson’s “excellent” performances and gave him significant ice time throughout the season. Hutson played at least 20 minutes in 70 of 81 regular-season games, showcasing his reliability and impact.
