Interview with Scott Jean, President and CEO of EMC Insurance Companies
Interviewer: Thank you for joining us today, Scott. The announcement about the renaming of Hy-Vee Hall to EMC Expo Center has generated a lot of excitement. What motivated EMC Insurance Companies to pursue the naming rights?
Scott Jean: Thank you for having me. Our decision to secure the naming rights for the facility stems from our commitment to the community. We are deeply rooted in Des Moines, and we want to strengthen our presence by supporting a venue that is vital to the cultural and economic fabric of our region.
Interviewer: What do you hope to achieve through this ten-year partnership with Polk County?
Scott Jean: Our primary goal is to foster community engagement. The EMC Expo Center hosts a variety of events that cater to different interests, from farmers’ markets to conventions. We see ourselves as partners in facilitating these gatherings, enhancing the community’s opportunities for connection, education, and entertainment.
Interviewer: Polk County Board Chair Angela Connolly expressed her excitement about the partnership. How do you view your collaboration with the county?
Scott Jean: We have a great working relationship with Polk County. Their vision for the venue aligns closely with ours, and together we can create a space that not only hosts events but also contributes positively to the local economy. I’m looking forward to discussing the specifics of our financial agreement in the upcoming board meeting.
Interviewer: The EMC Expo Center boasts significant space for exhibits and events. Are there any upcoming events you are particularly excited about?
Scott Jean: Absolutely! We have a fantastic lineup of events, starting with the Downtown Winter Farmers’ Market this November. I’m particularly looking forward to the “Yu-Gi-Oh!” regional tournament in January—it’s always thrilling to see the passion of the participants. Additionally, the Des Moines Home and Garden Show in February presents a wonderful opportunity for local businesses and homeowners to connect.
Interviewer: Beyond the immediate benefits for your company, how does EMC Insurance plan to give back to the community through events held at the EMC Expo Center?
Scott Jean: We think of our involvement as not just a sponsorship but a way to enhance community activities. We will encourage events that focus on education, training, and community support within the Expo Center. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and can benefit from the various offerings.
Interviewer: Lastly, with the concurrent news of Wells Fargo Arena being renamed the Casey’s Center, do you think this trend of naming rights will continue for venues in Iowa?
Scott Jean: I believe it will. Naming rights generate significant revenue for venues, allowing them to improve facilities and expand their programming. As companies recognize the value of community engagement through these partnerships, we can expect to see more organizations stepping up to invest in local venues.
Interviewer: Thank you, Scott. Your insights on this transition are invaluable, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact of the EMC Expo Center in the years to come.
Scott Jean: Thank you for having me. We’re excited to be part of it!
