Overview
On August 14, 2025, the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) hosted an international seminar focused on “Hyperglycemia in Pregnancy in Latin America.” The event brought together leading experts from the Pan american Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the new life Foundation of Colombia, and the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of the Northeast (UNNE) in Argentina. The seminar aimed to address the growing concern of gestational diabetes and its impact on maternal and infant health across Latin America.
The Challenge of Hyperglycemia in Pregnancy in latin America
Hyperglycemia in pregnancy, encompassing both pre-existing diabetes and gestational diabetes, poses ample risks to both mother and child. These risks include preeclampsia, increased rates of cesarean delivery, macrosomia (large birth weight), neonatal hypoglycemia, and long-term metabolic complications for both mother and offspring. Latin America faces unique challenges in addressing this issue, including limited access to prenatal care, socioeconomic disparities, and varying levels of healthcare infrastructure.
According to a 2023 report by the World Health Organization (WHO), diabetes prevalence is rising globally, with Latin America experiencing a particularly rapid increase. This trend directly contributes to a higher incidence of hyperglycemia in pregnancy. The report highlights the need for improved screening programs and access to effective diabetes management strategies.
