Recognizing the subtle signs of medical conditions can be‍ the difference between effective treatment and misdiagnosis.⁣ A recent case highlights a potentially life-threatening scenario⁢ where severely low potassium levels mimicked the symptoms of a ‍large vessel occlusion stroke.

The mimic: Hypokalemia and Stroke-Like Symptoms

A 61-year-old man ‍presented to the emergency department exhibiting symptoms⁣ strikingly similar to a stroke: ⁢weakness on one side of his body and difficulty speaking. Initial assessments, including a CT angiogram, suggested a blockage in a major artery supplying the brain – a large vessel⁣ occlusion (LVO). This finding ⁢promptly raised concerns ⁣about the need for urgent intervention to restore blood flow.

However, further investigation revealed a surprising culprit: severe hypokalemia, or critically low potassium levels. His potassium level was measured at 1.9 mEq/L,⁤ significantly below the normal range of 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/L.
