Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled the production version of its Ioniq 3, a compact electric vehicle designed to compete in the growing segment of affordable EVs, marking a significant step in the automaker’s strategy to expand its electric lineup beyond premium models.

The Ioniq 3, first previewed as a concept in late 2024, features a projected driving range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge under the WLTP cycle, according to Hyundai’s technical specifications released during the vehicle’s global reveal in Seoul on April 18, 2026. This positions the model among the longest-range compact EVs currently available, surpassing rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.2all and the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric in official range estimates.

Built on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the same architecture underpinning the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, the Ioniq 3 utilizes a rear-wheel-drive layout as standard, with an optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant expected to launch in early 2027. The base model delivers 150 kilowatts (approximately 201 horsepower), while the performance-oriented version increases output to 225 kilowatts (302 horsepower), enabling a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 6.7 seconds.

Hyundai has confirmed that the Ioniq 3 will enter production at its newly upgraded plant in Ulsan, South Korea, beginning in Q3 2026, with initial shipments to European markets scheduled for October 2026. North American availability is expected to follow in Q1 2027, pending final certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Transport Canada.

Pricing for the Ioniq 3 has not yet been officially announced, but industry analysts estimate a starting price of approximately €32,000 in Germany and £28,500 in the United Kingdom, positioning it below the Ioniq 5’s entry point of €41,900 and competitive with the upcoming Volkswagen ID.2all, which is projected to start at €25,000. Hyundai has emphasized that the vehicle will qualify for various government EV incentives across Europe, including Germany’s environmental bonus and France’s ecological bonus, potentially reducing the effective purchase price by up to €9,000 in some markets.

The automaker highlighted the Ioniq 3’s aerodynamic efficiency, citing a drag coefficient of 0.23 — among the lowest in its class — achieved through active grille shutters, underbody panels and optimized wheel design. Interior space has been maximized through the E-GMP’s flat floor and short overhangs, offering 310 liters of trunk volume, expandable to 1,050 liters with the rear seats folded, alongside a 57-liter front trunk (frunk) for additional storage.

Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with over-the-air update capability, wireless smartphone integration, and a suite of driver-assistance systems branded as Hyundai SmartSense, featuring forward collision-avoidance assist, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims will offer a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, and a premium audio system developed in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen.

Hyundai’s executive vice president and global head of product planning, Jay Joseph, stated during the unveiling: “The Ioniq 3 represents our commitment to making electric mobility accessible without compromising on range, performance, or design. We are bringing the benefits of our E-GMP architecture to a broader audience, particularly in urban and suburban markets where compact EVs are seeing the strongest demand.”

Industry analysts at BloombergNEF noted that the Ioniq 3’s arrival intensifies competition in the B-segment EV market, which is projected to grow from 450,000 units sold globally in 2025 to over 1.8 million annually by 2030. “Hyundai is leveraging its early investment in dedicated EV platforms to scale efficiently,” said Alicia Garcia, senior analyst at BloombergNEF. “The Ioniq 3 could become a volume leader in Europe if pricing and incentives align favorably.”

The vehicle will be offered with two battery options: a standard 58 kilowatt-hour pack and an extended 77.4 kilowatt-hour unit, the latter enabling the claimed 600-kilometer WLTP range. Charging capabilities include 800-volt architecture, allowing for 10 to 80 percent state-of-charge in approximately 18 minutes using a 350-kilowatt DC fast charger — a feature typically reserved for higher-priced EVs.

Hyundai has not disclosed projected annual production volumes for the Ioniq 3, but confirmed that the Ulsan plant’s EV line has been expanded to support up to 200,000 units per year across the Ioniq 3, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6 models combined. The company reiterated its long-term goal of achieving 1 million annual EV sales globally by 2030, with the Ioniq 3 expected to contribute significantly to that target, particularly in price-sensitive markets.
