For decades,HIV has been recognized as a critical public health challenge. However, emerging research highlights a significant and often overlooked outcome of the virus: an increased risk of cancer. A new study published in The Lancet Global Health on August 19, 2025, provides the first comprehensive global assessment of cancer cases attributable to HIV infection, revealing stark regional differences in both incidence and cancer types.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the bodyS immune system, specifically targeting CD4 cells. As HIV weakens the immune system, individuals become more susceptible to opportunistic infections, including various cancers. The World Health Organization (WHO) explains that HIV weakens immunity,making individuals vulnerable to illnesses like tuberculosis,fungal infections,severe bacterial infections,and certain cancers.
Global Burden and Regional Disparities
Researchers analyzed data from the IARC GLOBOCAN 2022 database and found an estimated 81,300 cancer cases worldwide in 2022 were attributable to HIV infection. A striking 70% of these cases occurred in Africa, underscoring the disproportionate impact of the virus on the continent. Within Africa, cervical cancer and Kaposi sarcoma accounted for over 75% of HIV-related cancers – more than 40% and 35% respectively.
The impact is particularly acute in eastern and Southern Africa, where cancers linked to HIV represent more than 10% of the total cancer burden. Across the continent as a whole, these cancers account for over 5% of all cancer diagnoses.
In contrast, North America and Western and Northern Europe experience a much lower proportion of cancer cases linked to HIV, ranging from 0.1% to 0.4% of the total cancer burden. In these regions, anal cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are more frequently observed in individuals with HIV.
