A new book co-authored by UC Davis Professor Aldrin Gomes and 36 of his students sheds light on the often-overlooked risks associated with ibuprofen, a widely used painkiller. The book delves into the potential adverse effects of ibuprofen, including cardiovascular complications and interactions with other medications.
Gomes, who teaches neurobiology, physiology, and behavior, notes that while ibuprofen provides affordable pain relief for millions, it’s crucial to understand the balance between its benefits and risks. Many people regularly use ibuprofen for headaches, aches, pains, and fever reduction.
However, the book highlights potential side effects such as stomach bleeding, heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. Gomes cited a study indicating that ibuprofen could triple the risk of stroke, with other studies showing a 10% to 50% increased risk, even with just a few weeks of daily use.Furthermore, ibuprofen can interact negatively with over 400 prescription drugs and can be toxic to pets if ingested. It also contaminates waterways, harming aquatic life.

Gomes’s research focuses on the biochemical pathways through which ibuprofen and similar drugs impact the body, both in alleviating pain and causing adverse reactions, with a particular emphasis on the cardiovascular system.
The book project began as a learning experience for Gomes’s undergraduate students, who often lacked awareness of ibuprofen’s potential downsides.he saw it as an prospect to involve more undergraduates in experiential learning, complementing their research projects.
ahmad Ikram, a UC Davis graduate and major contributor, emphasized the importance of effective science communication. He said, “Being part of this project taught me that good science is not just about making discoveries, but about how effectively we communicate them.”
The book covers various aspects of ibuprofen, including its mechanisms for pain, fever, and inflammation relief, its effects on major organs, responsible usage guidelines, and natural pain relief alternatives. It aims to provide a comprehensive guide to ibuprofen and its effects.
Gomes said, “Ibuprofen is an affordable and widely used medication that has transformed pain management for millions worldwide. However, its story serves as a powerful reminder of the delicate balance between benefit and risk.”
