ICC Makes History: T20 World Cup Men’s and Women’s Teams to Receive Equal Prize Money
ICC Takes Historic Decision to Equalize Prize Money for Men’s and Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup Champions
New Delhi – In a groundbreaking move, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that it will equalize the prize money for men’s and women’s champions in the T20 Cricket World Cup, starting from the Women’s World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in October.
The ICC has revealed that the winners of the Women’s T20 World Cup will receive a record-breaking prize of $2.34 million (Rs 19.5 crore), marking a significant milestone in the history of the sport. This decision represents a major step forward in promoting gender equality in cricket.
The decision to equalize the prize money was made at the ICC Annual Conference held in July 2023. Initially, the ICC had planned to implement this reform in 2030, but it has since decided to bring it forward.
According to the revised prize money structure, the winners of the T20 World Cup will receive $2.34 million, a staggering 134% increase from the $1 million (Rs 8 crore) awarded to the champions of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in South Africa. The runner-up team will receive $1.17 million (Rs 14 crore), while the two losing teams in the semi-finals will receive $675,000 (Rs 5.5 crore) each.
In addition to the increased prize money for the winners and runners-up, the ICC has also introduced a new payment structure for teams that win matches in the group stage. Each team will receive $31,154 (Rs 26,11,155) for every win in the group stage. Furthermore, the amount awarded to teams that enter the knockout stage and those eliminated in the group stage has also been increased by 78% since last year.
The total prize money for the tournament will be $7,958,080 (Rs 66.5 crore), representing a 225% increase from the $2.45 million (Rs 20,53,40,747) awarded in 2023.
