The united States has imposed sanctions on four International Criminal Court (ICC) officials, citing “illegitimate” and “politized” investigations‌ into American soldiers and⁤ Israeli officials. The move, announced Thursday, drew immediate condemnation from⁤ the ICC but garnered praise from⁣ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The sanctions,‌ which include barring entry to the U.S. and freezing any U.S.-held⁤ assets, are typically reserved for criminals or political leaders ⁣of adversarial nations, not judicial officers. the ‌U.S. state Department defended ⁤the action, asserting it reflects the serious threat posed by the ⁣ICC’s politicization and abuse of power. They claim the targeted individuals are⁢ actively involved in the ICC’s unfounded actions against the U.S.and Israel.

The sanctioned magistrates include Solomy Balungi Bossa ⁣and‍ Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza, involved ‌in ICC probes of alleged war crimes by U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Reine Alapini Gansou and Beti Hohler, who authorized arrest warrants⁤ for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over the ‍Gaza conflict, are also targeted. the judges found ⁣reasonable grounds to suspect both‌ men of war crimes ⁣and ‍crimes against humanity.

This action follows⁤ earlier sanctions against ICC prosecutor ⁤Karim Khan, who initiated proceedings against Israeli officials. Khan has‍ as recused himself amid an investigation into⁣ alleged misconduct.

Accusations of Impunity

Netanyahu thanked the U.S. ⁤for it’s support. He stated that the U.S. is rightly defending the right of Israel, the U.S., and⁣ all democracies to defend‌ themselves against terrorism.

The ICC responded that the sanctions are ⁤a blatant attempt to undermine the independence of an international judicial institution operating under the⁢ mandate‍ of 125 member states. The court⁤ affirmed ⁢its full support for ⁣its staff and vowed to continue its work undeterred. It added that targeting those who‌ work for ‍justice‌ does⁢ nothing to help civilians caught in ⁢conflict and ‌only emboldens those who ⁤believe they can⁣ act with impunity.

Liz Evenson of Human Rights Watch said the U.S. sanctions aim to deter the ICC from holding accountable those responsible for serious crimes ⁤committed in Israel⁢ and Palestine, especially amid increasing atrocities in Gaza. ⁤She added that sanctions‌ should be used to ‍end human rights violations, not to punish ⁤those seeking justice for the most serious crimes.

neither the U.S. nor⁤ Israel ⁤are members of the ICC and do not recognize its jurisdiction‌ over their⁢ citizens. ⁣During Donald Trump’s first term, the ICC and then-prosecutor Fatou Bensouda were previously targeted with ⁣U.S. sanctions, which were lifted ⁣by President Joe Biden in 2021.

What’s next

The sanctions are expected to⁢ further strain relations between the U.S.and the ICC, perhaps ‌impacting future ⁣international legal proceedings and ⁢cooperation.
