A significant piece of The Beatles’ local history in Liverpool is facing the possibility of being sold for scrap after efforts to find a new home for the artifact were unsuccessful.
The item in question is the mast of the ship the Salvor, which served on the Mersey docks for several decades. The mast is historically notable for serving as the backdrop to the first official photograph of the band after Ringo Starr joined the lineup in 1962.
For decades following that photograph, the mast remained at a central location in Liverpool city centre near the Liver Buildings. However, it was moved in 2020 to accommodate roadworks.
The Liverpool City Council has stated that it has been unable to find a new home for the mast despite previously being open to offers. The artifact now faces the threat of being broken up and sold as spare metal.
Local campaigners are currently attempting to prevent the loss of the piece. Among them is Peter Elson, a former reporter for the Liverpool Echo
, who is working to secure a suitable relocation for the mast.
Elson has expressed concern over the council’s approach to the memorabilia, citing previous instances where historic sites were nearly lost.
It’s a no-brainer that a massive piece of Beatles memorabilia like that should be saved, yet they were going to sell it for scrap. You would think that they would have learned after that whole own goal with the Cavern and Ringo’s house in Madryn Street, which they were going to demolish until a campaign was launched to save it.

The threat to the Salvor mast comes during a period of significant activity for the remaining members of the band in 2026.
Paul McCartney is scheduled to release a new album, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane
, on May 29, 2026. The project includes a nostalgic reflection on their Liverpool roots titled Home To Us
, which features a duet between McCartney and Ringo Starr. This track marks the first vocal collaboration between the two former bandmates.
The McCartney album also features contributions from The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde and Texas’ Sharleen Spiteri.
Ringo Starr also released his 22nd solo album, Long Long Road
, in April 2026. Produced by T-Bone Burnett, the record features guest appearances by Billy Strings, Sheryl Crow, and St. Vincent.
Discussing the collaborations on the record, Starr highlighted the quality of the musicians involved.
Everyone on there brings something different because they’re all great players and singers. They’re great musicians who have been at it a while, and they all came through T Bone. In my eyes, he’s never made a mistake on my records.

Beyond new music, the band’s legacy is the subject of several upcoming film projects. Director Sam Mendes is developing a quartet of big-screen biopics, with each film focusing on the perspective of a different member of The Beatles.
Scheduled for release in April 2028, the films will feature the following casting:
- Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney
- Harris Dickinson as John Lennon
- Joseph Quinn as George Harrison
- Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr
Steven Soderbergh is producing a documentary titled John Lennon: The Last Interview
. Soderbergh has revealed that the production includes the use of generative AI.
