Indonesia is setting its sights on achieving an ambitious 8% economic growth target, with a key focus on developing its domestic Data and Dialog Technology (ICT) manufacturing sector. Deputy Industry Minister Faisol Riza recently emphasized the sector’s potential to significantly contribute to this growth, signaling a strategic shift away from reliance on commodity-based exports.

The Indonesian government is actively studying the prosperous development models of leading high-tech nations like India, Vietnam, and Taiwan. India’s rapid growth in the ICT industry over the past decade, fueled by substantial investment and a robust production base, is a particular area of focus.
“We are currently studying and wanting to adapt the strategies employed by these countries,” stated Riza, highlighting the importance of attracting investment and fostering a strong domestic ICT ecosystem. This includes analyzing policies that incentivized manufacturing, attracted skilled labor, and facilitated integration into global supply chains.
Shifting from Commodities to High-Value Manufacturing
Currently, Indonesia’s export economy is heavily reliant on commodities such as coal and palm oil. The government aims to diversify exports by prioritizing growth in the manufacturing sector, particularly ICT. This transition is seen as crucial for long-term economic stability and resilience.
“We expect greater growth from the manufacturing sector, especially ICT,” Riza affirmed. This shift isn’t simply about increasing export volume; it’s about increasing the value of those exports. Moving up the value chain from raw materials to finished, high-tech products will generate higher revenues and create more skilled jobs within Indonesia.
Building a Complete Domestic ICT Supply chain
A core component of this strategy is integrating Indonesia into the global ICT supply chain – not just as an assembly point for imported components, but as a producer of those components themselves. Riza posed a critical question: “Are our industries ready? Can our raw materials be processed into high-quality electronic components that are globally competitive?”
The ICT industry is incredibly complex,encompassing thousands of components – from integrated circuits (ICs) and central processing units (CPUs) to batteries,screens,resistors,and transistors. Developing domestic capabilities across this entire spectrum represents a significant possibility for Indonesia.
The government’s vision extends beyond simple assembly. They aim to foster a complete, end-to-end production chain within the country, requiring collaboration and support from all stakeholders. this includes:
Investment in Research & development: Developing indigenous technologies and improving manufacturing processes.
