A grassroots campaign to restore abortion access in Idaho is approaching the signature threshold required to place the Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act on the November ballot.
Organizers with Idahoans United for Women & Families reported that they had collected approximately 96,000 signatures by early April 2026. Some reports indicate the total is nearing 100,000 signatures as the campaign enters its final phase before the submission deadline.
Ballot Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the November ballot, the initiative must meet specific legal requirements established by Idaho law. The campaign is required to submit more than 70,000 valid signatures.
Beyond the raw number of signatures, the initiative must satisfy a geographic distribution requirement. This mandate requires the campaign to meet signature thresholds across at least 18 different legislative districts.
Melanie Folwell, the executive director of Idahoans United for Women & Families, noted that the geography of the state represents one of the most significant challenges for the campaign.
Timeline and Verification Process
The campaign is currently operating under a strict deadline, with all collected signatures required to be submitted by the end of April 2026.
Following the submission at the end of April, county officials will begin a verification process. These officials have several weeks to determine the validity of the signatures and ensure the initiative meets the necessary legal and geographic criteria to appear on the ballot in November.
The current total of approximately 96,000 signatures was collected to provide a buffer above the 70,000 minimum, accounting for potential duplicate entries or signatures that may be deemed invalid during the verification process.
Campaign Objectives and Outreach
The Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act aims to end the current strict abortion ban in Idaho. Volunteers have been canvassing statewide to gather support, and signatures.
Folwell stated that the conversations volunteers are having with residents have highlighted the real-world impact of the state’s abortion ban. According to reporting from Repro Rights NOW, Folwell described the effort as focusing on a kitchen table issue where the rubber meets the road
rather than treating it as a social device or a narrow women’s issue
.
What I hear from our volunteers again and again is that the conversations they’re having on doors are astonishing, heartbreaking. The number of people that we encounter who have been personally impacted by Idaho’s ban is pretty heartbreaking.

The campaign continues to operate in the final weeks leading up to the April deadline to ensure the initiative secures a place on the November ballot.
