The IEEE unveiled its 2027 Technical Field Award recipients on September 22, 2026, honoring global researchers, innovators, and collaborative teams for breakthroughs spanning medical robotics, artificial intelligence, microelectronics, and wireless networks. Selected by the IEEE Awards Board and approved by the IEEE Board of Directors, the annual awards recognize technical achievements, societal impact, and leadership across specialized engineering disciplines.
Honoring Pioneers in Medical Robotics and Therapeutic Ultrasound
In the biomedical and medical robotics categories, IEEE Life Fellow Kullervo Hynynen of the Sunnybrook Research Institute and the University of Toronto received the IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award for pioneering contributions to the development, advancement, and clinical translation of therapeutic ultrasound. IEEE Life Fellow Russell H. also Taylor of Johns Hopkins University earned the IEEE Robotics and Automation Award for his contributions to, leadership in, and clinical translation of surgical and medical robotics.
Advancements in Computing, Data Storage, and Silicon Technology
Several awards recognize foundational hardware and computing achievements that power modern digital infrastructure. Seagate Technology researchers—including IEEE Member Edward Charles Gage, IEEE Fellow Ganping Ju, and IEEE Fellow Jan-Ulrich Thiele—received the IEEE Cledo Brunetti Award for contributions to heat-assisted magnetic technology powering ultra-high-capacity hard disk drives. In solid-state circuits, IEEE Life Fellow Wanda Kay Gass of Texas Instruments won the IEEE Donald O. Pederson Award in Solid-State Circuits for pioneering contributions to programmable digital signal processing systems. IEEE Member Ann B. also Kelleher, retired from Intel in Portland, Oregon, received the IEEE Frederik Philips Award for leading the historic advancement of CMOS process technology, culminating in the first node with backside power delivery.
Global Leadership in Communications, Artificial Intelligence, and Signal Processing
The 2027 honorees also include key contributors to internet architecture, video standards, and neural network theory. Google’s Amin Vahdat received the IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computers and Communications Award for developing network systems that scale data centers to support modern cloud computing and machine learning. In video analytics, a collaborative team comprising Jens-Rainer Ohm of RWTH Aachen University, Gary J. Sullivan of Dolby Laboratories, and Benjamin Bross of the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications Heinrich-Hertz-Institut was awarded the IEEE Arun N. Netravali Video Analytics, Technology, and Systems Award for leadership in and contributions to developing the High Efficiency Video Coding international standard. Meanwhile, IEEE Life Fellow Shun-ichi Amari of Teikyo University secured the IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award for foundational contributions to neural network theory and information geometry.

Ceremony Schedule and Ongoing Award Nominations
Mary Ellen Randall, 2026 IEEE president and CEO, stated in a news release that the honorees embody the relentless spirit of innovation and ingenuity that defines our global community.
