The publication known as The Institute
is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026. Established in 1976, the publication was created to maintain a communication link between the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and its members, reporting on the organization’s initiatives, products, services, and technical standards.
Over the last five decades, the publication has expanded its editorial focus beyond its original directive. Its current coverage includes reporting on IEEE Milestones, which recognize significant historical technical achievements, as well as providing educational resources and career-guidance articles specifically designed to support young professionals.
The delivery format of the publication has undergone several iterations since its inception. In 1976, it began as a monthly four-page insert within the print edition of IEEE Spectrum
. By 1977, it transitioned into a separate newspaper published six times per year and distributed alongside Spectrum
, before becoming a monthly publication in 1978.
In the current publishing model, all articles from The Institute
are published online. A curated selection of these stories is featured in a 16-page quarterly print edition, which is included in the March, June, September, and December issues of IEEE Spectrum
.
To complement its primary publications, the organization introduced a bimonthly newsletter called The Institute Alert
in 2003 to provide members with summaries of the latest online news. The publication also maintains a presence on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook to keep the community updated.
Despite these changes in medium and scope, one original feature from 1976 has remained constant: the IEEE People
subsection. This section focuses on profiles of IEEE members from around the world and remains among the publication’s most popular content.
The longest-serving editor in chief for the publication describes the role of the staff as chronicling the stories of individuals who act as unseen visionaries and problem-solvers
working on technologies that reshape the world.
By highlighting their careers and how IEEE has played a role in their professional growth, we hope to inspire the next generation of engineers and technologists to continue a legacy of innovation and service to humanity.
