If Tel Aviv clings to the war option…what about the ceasefire talks in Lebanon?

If Tel Aviv clings to the war option…what about the ceasefire talks in Lebanon?

November 21, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

US Ambassador Amos Hochstein expressed hope for a ceasefire in Lebanon after “constructive” talks with Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri. He stated that the decision for a ceasefire depends on both Lebanon and Israel, and there is a chance of ending the conflict soon.

This optimism from the US comes as Israel shows readiness to continue its military actions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that negotiations would occur amidst ongoing hostilities, asserting that Israel would fight fiercely if needed. In response, Hezbollah has intensified its strikes on Israeli cities like Haifa and Tel Aviv.

Lebanese officials referred to the talks as “good and constructive,” yet acknowledged unresolved issues that may hinder a final agreement. Reports suggest that freedom of Israeli military operations in Lebanon has not yet been negotiated successfully. Berri noted that Israel’s guarantees depend on US involvement, cautioning that Israel might not uphold prior commitments.

Lawrence Korob, a researcher at the Center for American Progress, sees Hochstein’s visit as a sign of a potential ceasefire. However, he expressed concern that time is limited for the Biden administration to address the conflict, suggesting that the situation is more urgent now than it was a year ago.

Ali Sabiti, director of the Arab Center for Dialogue, believes the US proposal remains unclear to Lebanese officials. He suggested that the US is primarily pushing for the implementation of Resolution 1701, indicating that the focus is not on any new solutions.

Dr. Muhannad Mustafa, a researcher at the Mada Al-Karmel Center, stated that Israel aims to end the conflict with Lebanon to focus on Gaza. He mentioned that discussions are based on US-Israeli negotiations that emphasize the implementation of Resolution 1701, with Israel seeking conditions related to military action.

These developments reflect ongoing tensions and complex negotiations in the region, as various parties seek their interests amid the conflict.
