Exclusive Interview with Manoj Bajpayee at IFFI 2024
Interviewer: The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) kicked off in Goa this week, and we had the privilege to sit down with acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee on the first day of the festival. Manoj, your career has been marked by powerful performances and a commitment to independent cinema. Can you share what drives your choice in film projects?
Manoj Bajpayee: Thank you for having me. What drives me is the quest for authentic storytelling and the search for narratives that resonate with my understanding of life and art. Over time, I realized that mainstream cinema wasn’t providing the scripts that connected with me. This led me on a journey to collaborate with young, innovative filmmakers who are passionate about their craft and unafraid to explore new ideas.
Interviewer: In your experience filming “Gangs Of Wasseypur,” you mentioned a turning point where you sought out new opportunities. Can you elaborate on that?
Manoj Bajpayee: Absolutely. While working on “Gangs Of Wasseypur,” I discovered that to grow as an actor, I needed to break away from conventional roles. The realization struck me that the mainstream landscape often limits creativity. That experience prompted me to connect with emerging talents like Dipesh Jain and Kanu Bahl, focusing on scripts that challenge me and push the boundaries of storytelling.
Interviewer: As someone who has embraced independent cinema, how do you view its current landscape?
Manoj Bajpayee: Independent cinema is indeed struggling right now. Many platforms that once embraced indie films have become less supportive, which makes it tough for filmmakers and artists to get their work out there. However, I remain hopeful. The essence of independent cinema lies in its ability to challenge the norm and reflect the true fabric of life. It will rebound, as the audience’s hunger for genuine storytelling is insatiable.
Interviewer: Your upcoming project, “Despatch,” directed by Kanu Bahl, is set to premiere here at IFFI. What can audiences expect from this film?
Manoj Bajpayee: “Despatch” is a project close to my heart. It’s a gripping narrative that delves into contemporary issues, presented through a unique lens. I believe audiences will appreciate its bold approach and the way it challenges conventional narratives. It’s an honor to showcase it at IFFI, a platform that champions diverse voices.
Interviewer: Lastly, as you continue to explore short films and newer formats, what advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers and actors?
Manoj Bajpayee: My advice is simple: stay true to your vision. Don’t hesitate to experiment and take risks. The world of cinema is vast, and there’s room for everyone with a real story to tell. Embrace your artistic instincts and collaborate with like-minded talents. The future of cinema lies in the hands of those who are willing to swim against the tide.
Interviewer: Thank you, Manoj, for sharing your insights. We look forward to seeing you in “Despatch” and wish you continued success in your career.
Manoj Bajpayee: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure.
Bajpayee also spoke candidly about the current state of independent cinema, describing it as struggling. He noted that platforms that once supported indie films have become less welcoming. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic that independent cinema will eventually rise again, as it represents the true essence of film as an art form.
His latest project, “Despatch,” directed by Kanu Bahl, will premiere at IFFI 2024. Bajpayee was last seen in “Bhaiyya ji.”
