Iga⁤ Swiatek, the world’s‌ former No.​ 1-ranked woman, received increased security at the Miami Open after⁤ an unruly‍ fan verbally abused her during a practice session. The incident occurred last weekend, according to⁤ BBC reports.

The enhanced security measures ⁤were implemented before Swiatek’s Wednesday match, where she was upset in the quarterfinals by Alexandra Eala.

The ​spectator,described as “aggressive adn taunting,” ⁤allegedly shouted personal insults about Swiatek’s family. The BBC‌ reports that the fan had previously sent abusive ⁢messages online. Swiatek’s team reported the incident, prompting ‌tournament organizers and the WTA to increase security before ⁤her match.

“Security is a top priority,” a spokesperson for swiatek saeid. “Constructive criticism ‌is one thing, ​and threats, hate speech or even disturbance during ‌training ‌is another — this cannot be condoned.”

The incident‌ involving⁣ Swiatek follows another recent case of disturbing fan ⁤behavior toward a women’s tennis star. At ​the Dubai Championships, play ‍was ‌halted after ‌Emma‌ Raducanu was ‌frightened by a man stalking ‌her during ⁤her second-round match. Enhanced security‍ was also put in place ​for ​her. The man has since been banned from ‍all WTA tournaments.

It is uncertain whether​ the harassment incident affected Swiatek’s play, but she lost her quarterfinal match to Alexandra ⁢Eala. Eala, 19, ​pulled off a major upset after entering⁣ the Miami open⁣ as ⁢a wild card. Swiatek won the event in 2022.
