Swedish homeware retailer IKEA and Xbox released the nine-piece YXSTABY gaming collection, bringing versatile furniture and accessories designed for everyday living spaces to markets in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Collaboration and Design Inspired by the Xbox Controller
The YXSTABY collection was developed through a close partnership where one designer from IKEA and one from Xbox worked together on every piece. Xbox contributed 25 years of understanding player needs, while IKEA brought over 80 years of home-furnishing expertise. Designers visited homes where gaming is part of daily life to study how players interact with their spaces and how furniture can accommodate both gaming and routine household activities. Several items draw direct visual and functional inspiration from the Xbox controller. The D-pad appears on a lap cushion and as a stainless steel decorative platter, while mirrored display boxes showcase controllers and collectibles from every angle. Philip Dilé, Product Design Developer at IKEA of Sweden, stated, How people play at home has shifted, and it is as much about relaxing and connecting with others as it is about performing, which changes what the space has to do.
The collection’s centerpiece is the thumbstick stool, developed from original 3D device design files with Xbox device designers. David Wahl, Designer at IKEA of Sweden, noted that the stool even moves the way a thumbstick does, so it tilts with you while you play.
Versatility and Practical Storage for Shared Living Spaces
Designed for the more than 3 billion people who play video games globally, the range addresses the reality that gaming often takes place in multi-use rooms like kitchens and living rooms. Pieces like the mobile TV stand include rear storage and roll away when gaming sessions end. A portable toolbox functions as a laptop stand when closed, allowing a dining table to quickly transition back to non-gaming use.
Future Availability and Expansion of the Gaming Range
The YXSTABY collection became available for purchase with identical lineups offered across US and UK storefronts. Whether IKEA and Xbox plan to expand the YXSTABY line with additional pieces or localized variants remains unannounced by either company.
