A New Approach for the Indian Market
Swedish home-furnishing giant IKEA is substantially reshaping its strategy in India, moving beyond the large-format stores it’s traditionally known for. The company is now prioritizing a blend of smaller, city-friendly stores, integrated mixed-use developments, and a substantial expansion of its online presence to better serve the diverse needs of Indian consumers.

This shift reflects an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the Indian retail landscape, particularly the need to adapt to densely populated urban centers. Rather than relying solely on expansive, warehouse-style stores, IKEA is embracing a more agile and accessible approach.
Expansion Plans: Cities and Timelines
IKEA’s expansion isn’t limited to store format changes. The company is actively targeting key metropolitan areas for growth. Online sales are slated to launch in Delhi-NCR by early 2025, with a physical store in Gurugram following in 2026. A second delhi-NCR location is planned for Noida in 2028. Beyond these initial steps,IKEA aims to penetrate six key markets: Hyderabad,Mumbai,Bengaluru,Delhi,Chennai, and Pune, and ultimately expand to 62 cities across the country.
Strengthening the Supply Chain
Alongside its retail expansion, IKEA is strategically integrating India into its global supply chain. This move serves a dual purpose: to better serve the growing Indian market with locally sourced products and to diversify its production base, reducing reliance on existing supply routes. This integration is expected to improve efficiency and responsiveness to local demand.
