Launched in November 2025, the new line – encompassing smart plugs, buttons, lights, and sensors – aimed to simplify the smart home experience by offering broad compatibility. However, reports indicate that the reality has been far from seamless, with a substantial number of devices failing to connect reliably or at all.

Matter Implementation Challenges

The problems center around both initial pairing and ongoing connectivity. Users are reporting that devices frequently get stuck during the connection process, failing to register on the network. Others experience intermittent disconnections, requiring repeated attempts to restore functionality. The issues appear to be widespread, affecting multiple smart home ecosystems including Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and even the open-source Home Assistant platform.

The scale of the problem came to light through reports on the Tradfri subreddit, where users began sharing their experiences. One user detailed an experiment purchasing 60 Bilresa buttons, only managing to successfully connect 31 of them. Interestingly, the success rate varied between batches, suggesting potential manufacturing inconsistencies. The Verge’s testing corroborated these user reports, with only two out of six tested devices – a smart bulb and an air quality monitor – connecting reliably. The other devices, including the Bilresa button, Myggspray motion sensor, and Timmerflotte temperature/humidity sensor, either failed to connect or experienced significant difficulties.

Ecosystem-Agnostic Issues

The frustrating aspect for many users is the lack of a clear pattern to the failures. Problems aren’t isolated to a specific smart home platform. Some users report difficulties specifically with Apple’s HomeKit, while others find their sensors disconnecting after functioning normally for days when integrated with Home Assistant. This suggests the issue isn’t tied to a particular ecosystem’s implementation of Matter, but rather a more fundamental problem with the IKEA devices themselves.

From Zigbee to Matter: A Rocky Transition?

IKEA’s shift from its previous reliance on the Zigbee standard to Matter was intended to streamline compatibility and improve the user experience. Matter, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, aims to create a unified application layer for smart home devices, allowing them to communicate seamlessly regardless of manufacturer. However, this transition appears to have been more challenging than anticipated. The move to Matter-over-Thread, a mesh networking protocol, was intended to improve range and reliability, but the current issues suggest the implementation isn’t yet delivering on that promise.

IKEA’s Response and Potential Fixes

IKEA has acknowledged the connectivity problems and stated that a dedicated team is investigating the raised concerns. The company is collaborating with the Connectivity Standards Alliance to address the issues. A firmware update for the Dirigera hub, which manages IKEA’s smart devices, has been released, though its effectiveness for users with devices connected to other platforms remains unclear. The update primarily addresses issues within the IKEA ecosystem and may not resolve compatibility problems with broader Matter implementations.

The problems highlight the complexities of implementing a new smart home standard, even with the best intentions. While Matter aims to simplify interoperability, the reality is that a successful rollout requires careful testing and refinement across a wide range of devices and network configurations. The current situation with IKEA’s devices serves as a cautionary tale, demonstrating that a standard alone isn’t enough to guarantee a seamless smart home experience. The sheer volume of complaints, however, is concerning, and suggests a significant portion of the initial product run is affected.

The long-term impact of these issues remains to be seen. IKEA’s reputation for affordable and accessible smart home products could be damaged if the connectivity problems persist. The situation also underscores the importance of thorough testing and quality control when adopting new technologies, particularly in the rapidly evolving smart home market.
