Nusantara Airport Poised for Public Access,Official Residences to Shrink
Jakarta,Indonesia – A meaningful shift in accessibility and urban planning for Indonesia’s ambitious new capital,Nusantara,is on the horizon. Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) have engaged in crucial discussions regarding the potential opening of Nusantara International Airport to the public and a proposed reduction in the size of official residences within the burgeoning city.
Airport Transformation: From VVIP to All
The current VVIP-only status of Nusantara International Airport has been a point of deliberation, with a proposal to open its gates to the general public gaining traction. Dede Yusuf, the deputy chair of Commission II, highlighted the practical implications of this potential change.
“VVIPs may not use the airport every month. Meanwhile, opening it for the public means that everyone can use it,” Yusuf explained at the Parliament Complex. He emphasized that this move would substantially enhance convenience for locals, particularly given that the closest public airport is currently in Balikpapan.
The legislator expressed optimism about the decision, stating, “I believe that we have agreed to open the airport for public use.” He further noted the airport’s robust infrastructure, including a 3-km runway capable of accommodating large aircraft like the Boeing 777, which can carry hundreds of passengers, underscoring its readiness for increased public traffic.

The decision to open Nusantara International Airport to the public is a strategic move that aligns with the principles of accessibility and economic growth. From an aviation infrastructure outlook, a runway of 3 kilometers is a standard for international airports, capable of handling a wide range of commercial aircraft. This length ensures sufficient takeoff and landing distances for even the largest passenger jets, such as the Boeing 777, under various weather conditions. The capacity to carry hundreds of passengers signifies the airport’s potential to become a major hub, fostering tourism and business connectivity for the new capital. This development is crucial for establishing Nusantara as a functional and accessible national centre.
Reshaping Official Residences: A Trend Towards Compact Living
in parallel, discussions have also centered on the size of residences designated for government officials in Nusantara. Reflecting a global trend towards more sustainable and efficient urban living, the OIKN has proposed a reduction in the footprint of these official homes.
“The OIKN head proposed to reduce the housing size by 20 percent. As a notable example, a 500-square-meter house will be reduced to 400 square meters,” Yusuf revealed, confirming that the commission has given its approval to this proposal. This adjustment aims to align housing development with contemporary preferences for more compact and perhaps more environmentally conscious living spaces.
Currently, a substantial number of housing units are being prepared for the influx of government officials, state apparatus, and military and police personnel. “So far, 44 thousand housing units have been prepared for government officials, state apparatus, and police and military officers in the new capital,” Yusuf added.

In many developed and developing nations, there’s a growing emphasis on creating more efficient, affordable, and sustainable housing solutions. This frequently enough translates to smaller, well-designed living spaces that minimize environmental impact and maximize functionality. Factors such as reduced construction costs, lower energy consumption for heating and cooling, and a focus on community-oriented design contribute to the appeal of compact housing. by embracing this trend, Nusantara is positioning itself as a modern capital that prioritizes smart urban development and aligns with the evolving needs and preferences of its future residents.
Clarification on Development Focus
Yusuf was keen to clarify that the recent meeting focused exclusively on these two key issues.”Just these two issues and nothing else,” he emphasized, addressing any potential speculation.
Despite these specific adjustments, the parliamentary commission reaffirmed its unwavering support for the overall development of Nusantara. The committed budget, as previously approved by all parties, remains a testament to this continued backing, ensuring the foundational progress of Indonesia’s new capital.
