IKN Construction Begins: Ministry of Public Works Setop Plans
Jakarta,Indonesia - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) will cease its direct involvement in the construction of Indonesia’s new capital city,IKN,starting next year. The responsibility will be fully transferred to the IKN Authority (OIKN), which is now fully operational.
deputy Minister of Public Works Diana Kusumastuti clarified that the ministry will only complete ongoing multi-year contract (MYC) projects initiated in 2022. “MYC hasn’t finished everything, hopefully this year. No later than 2026 has been completed,” Diana said.As 2022, under President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), the Ministry of Public Works has been responsible for establishing basic infrastructure in IKN, including toll roads, clean water channels, and government buildings. This was before the formal establishment of the OIKN.
The OIKN is now fully operational under the leadership of Basuki Hadimuljono, former Minister of PUPR, wiht a strengthened team of State Civil Apparatus (ASN) based in IKN.President Prabowo Subianto met with Basuki on January 21,2025,at the Jakarta Presidential Palace, tasking him with continuing IKN’s construction with a budget of Rp48.8 trillion over the next five years.
Diana stated that the Ministry of Public Works has a limited amount of remaining work in IKN, with a budget of Rp14 trillion allocated to complete these projects, including the toll road.Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo previously confirmed that IKN’s construction would continue under the OIKN. “If we only have the remnants of work that have not been completed, but there isn’t much. The budget is enough,” Dody said.
