Trump’s National Guard Deployment Draws Criticism
Updated June 14, 2025
President Donald Trump’s control of roughly 4,000 National Guard troops deployed around Los Angeles remains in place, after an appeals court stayed a previous order to return authority to California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The court had initially deemed Trump’s federalizing of the troops “illegal.” A three-judge panel is slated to rehear the case.
The legal battle unfolds as immigrant rights protests continue in Los Angeles, with nationwide demonstrations planned. These protests coincide with Trump’s planned military parade in washington, D.C., scheduled for his 79th birthday.
Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, speaking from Capitol Hill, sharply criticized the militarization. She tied her concerns to her memoir, “This Is What America Looks Like: My Journey from Refugee to Congresswoman.”
“We are in the midst of the creation of a police state,” omar said, decrying the presence of masked, armed individuals detaining people without identifying themselves. She also lamented the disregard for states’ rights, calling it a “constitutional crisis.”
Omar voiced alarm over the planned military parade. “I grew up in a dictatorship, and I don’t even remember ever witnessing anything like that,” she said, adding that the U.S. is being “turned into one of the worst countries, where the military are in our streets, without any regard for people’s constitutional rights.”
Trump issued a warning to potential protesters in Washington, D.C., stating they would be “met with very big force.”
omar responded, “The person who is in the process of destroying our country should look in the mirror — and that’s Trump.” She defended the right to protest as constitutionally protected, questioning whether Trump intended to deploy police or the military with “heavy force.”
omar also addressed the detention of students protesting Israeli policies in gaza, calling it another unconstitutional move by the Trump management. She emphasized that constitutional protections apply regardless of citizenship status.
She noted that courts have intervened in several detention cases, ordering releases. “Our Constitution will hold,” Omar asserted.
Turning to domestic issues, Omar criticized the support of some Democrats for a resolution praising ICE. She reiterated her commitment to holding police accountable for violence against protesters, saying,”Just the fact that you wear a uniform and wear a badge does not mean you have a right to harm people who are out doing — you know, participating in protest.”
What’s next
The appeals court will rehear arguments regarding the National Guard deployment, while protests are expected to continue nationwide. The debate over the role of law enforcement and the protection of constitutional rights is likely to intensify.
