Ilia Malinin, the American figure skater captivating audiences at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, comes from a family deeply rooted in the sport. Nicknamed the ‘Quad God’ for his groundbreaking ability to land the quadruple axel – a feat no other skater has achieved in competition – Malinin’s success is built on a foundation laid by his parents, Tatiana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov, both former Olympic skaters.

Malinin’s parents, originally from the Soviet Union, competed at the Olympic level before representing Uzbekistan after the dissolution of the USSR. They ultimately moved to the United States, settling in Northern Virginia, where they continued their involvement in figure skating as coaches and eventually raised their son, Ilia, born on December 2, 2004.

Tatiana Malinina’s Skating Career

Born in Novosibirsk, Russian SFSR in 1973, Tatiana Malinina boasts an impressive competitive record. Her father, Valeri Malinin, was also a figure skater who transitioned into coaching, while her mother was a gymnast. Malinina competed in ten consecutive World Championships, beginning in 1993.

A defining moment in her career came in 1999, when she became the first Four Continents Champion, winning gold at the inaugural event in February. She also secured gold medals at the 1998-99 Grand Prix event and the 1999 Asian Winter Games, adding a silver medal from the 1996 Asian Winter Games to her collection.

In 1998, Malinina and Skorniakov relocated to Dale City, Virginia, seeking improved training conditions. She participated in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, finishing eighth and later competed at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, but was forced to withdraw after the short program due to illness.

Roman Skorniakov’s Olympic Experience

Roman Skorniakov also represented Uzbekistan at both the 1998 Nagano and 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, achieving a 19th-place finish in both competitions. He and Malinina married in 2000 and dedicated themselves to coaching in the United States.

A Family Affair

The influence of Malinina and Skorniakov extends beyond Ilia. Their younger daughter, Liza, is also a figure skater, continuing the family’s legacy in the sport. Ilia Malinin’s parents chose to give their son his mother’s last name, with the masculine inflection, believing that Skorniakov would be too difficult for audiences to pronounce.

Malinin’s recent successes at the 2026 Winter Olympics, including leading Team USA to a gold medal in the team event, demonstrate the impact of his upbringing and the dedication instilled by his parents.
