Migrant Accused in Chicago synagogue Shooting Dies by Suicide in Custody
Chicago, IL - Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, the 22-year-old migrant from Mauritania accused of shooting a Jewish man outside a Chicago synagogue, has died by suicide while in custody, authorities said.
Abdallahi was found unresponsive in his cell at Cermak Health services on Saturday afternoon during a routine check. The Cook County sheriff’s Office reported the incident as an “apparent suicide by hanging.” He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“There is no suspicion of foul play at this time,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the death.
Abdallahi was arrested last month after allegedly shooting a man in the abdomen outside the Yeshivas Tchebiner synagogue in west Rogers Park. The victim,who was on his way to morning prayers,survived the attack.
The incident sparked outrage and fear within the jewish community, with many expressing concern about rising anti-Semitism.
