Illini Basketball Reacts to Loss Against No. 1 Tennessee
Illini Fall short Against Top-Ranked Tennessee in Heartbreaker
Champaign, IL – The Fighting Illini men’s basketball team put up a valiant fight against the nation’s top-ranked team, but ultimately fell short, losing 66-64 to the Tennessee Volunteers tuesday night.
The Illini, despite a spirited effort, struggled to overcome a sluggish start and a stifling Tennessee defense.
“We knew coming in that Tennessee was a tough matchup,” said Illini Inquirer’s Jeremy werner. “They’re incredibly physical and their defense is suffocating. But our guys showed a lot of heart tonight. They battled until the very end.”
Illinois trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, but clawed their way back with a late surge.
“It was a game of runs,” added Derek Piper, also of Illini Inquirer. ”Tennessee would build a lead, and then Illinois would answer.It was back and forth like that all night.”
