Illinois Launches National Quantum Algorithm Center with IBM
Illinois Aims to Be Quantum Computing Capital with New National Center
Chicago,IL – Illinois is making a bold move to become a global leader in quantum computing with the launch of a new national Quantum Algorithm Center. The enterprising project, a collaboration between tech giant IBM, leading universities, and the state government, aims to drive innovation and economic growth in the burgeoning field.
Governor JB Pritzker, joined by IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna, announced the initiative, emphasizing its potential to tackle complex challenges and create jobs.”We’re making Illinois the global quantum capital and the center for job growth in the quantum industry – a true center of innovation with the power to solve the world’s most pressing and complex challenges and create jobs and investment for our state,” Pritzker said.
The Center will leverage IBM’s cutting-edge “IBM Quantum System Two” and initially operate out of the Finding Partners Institute and the University of Chicago, before relocating to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP). This move is part of a larger strategy to position Illinois as a quantum computing hub.
To fuel this vision, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is investing $25 million in IQMP. This funding will support the development of quantum algorithms, a crucial element in advancing quantum computing. “Hardware necessitates significant advances in the algorithms and software,” the proclamation stated, highlighting the Center’s vital role in bridging this gap.
IBM’s involvement, a major endorsement of Illinois’ potential in quantum technology, extends beyond providing the quantum system. The company is committed to investing in the workforce that will drive the Center’s mission and co-investing with the state.
Local leaders have expressed excitement over the partnership.”Team Illinois is thrilled to welcome IBM as our collaborator in the National Quantum Algorithm Center,” said Christy george, President and CEO of Intersect illinois. Jack Lavin, President and CEO of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, echoed this sentiment, calling the collaboration “a defining step in solidifying the Chicagoland region and illinois as a global hub for quantum technologies.”
The establishment of the National Quantum Algorithm Center is more than just a step towards solidifying Illinois’ position in the quantum sector. It’s a strategic move with the potential to ripple through the state’s economy, fostering growth, developing local talent, and ultimately leading to lasting prosperity for the community.
