Illinois football has parted ways with first-year defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck just four games into the season, head coach Bret Bielema announced on Sunday. The dismissal follows a 42-19 loss to Ohio State, leaving the Illini with a 2-2 overall record and an 0-1 mark in Big Ten play. Hauck, the former Montana head coach, was hired in February to replace Aaron Henry after Henry left to join Notre Dame.
Defensive Struggles Prompt Sudden Staff Change
Through the first four games of the season, the Illinois defense struggled significantly under Hauck’s 3-3-5 scheme, which he previously ran at Montana. According to reports, the unit ranks 100th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 26.5 points per game, 111th in total defense at 391 yards per game, and 119th in pass defense.
The defensive deficiencies were heavily exposed during Saturday’s conference opener against No. 7 Ohio State. Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith caught 12 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Bielema noted after the game that the Illini alignment featured only nine players on the field during one play and that Ohio State recognized defensive playcalls on two separate explosive plays.
Bielema and Hauck Address Mutual Separation
Bielema stated that Hauck approached him early Sunday morning to request an early meeting to discuss the direction of the defense.
Early this morning, Coach Hauck contacted me to request a discussion prior to our scheduled appointment time. Following our conversation, we both concluded that altering our defensive leadership was the optimal course of action. At this juncture, Coach Hauck and I are in agreement that this represents the best direction moving forward for our coaching staff and, most importantly, our student-athletes.

Bielema added that the program has prepared for potential turnover and communicated a transition plan internally to players and staff. In his own remarks released by the school, Hauck expressed appreciation for his brief tenure in Champaign.

Upcoming Schedule for the Illini
Illinois has not yet named a replacement or assigned interim play-calling duties following Hauck’s departure. The program’s defensive staff still includes assistants retained from Montana, such as Hauck’s son Robby Hauck, who serves as an assistant defensive backs coach, along with former Grizzlies assistants Ronnie Bradford, Roger Cooper, and Mike Linehan. The Fighting Illini return to action on Saturday, hosting Purdue in Champaign as they attempt to rebound in Big Ten competition.
