Imagine Little Tokyo Short Story Contest Seeks Entries

Little Tokyo Story Contest Seeks to Capture the Heart of L.A.’s Historic Neighborhood

Los Angeles, CA – Calling all storytellers! The Little Tokyo Historical Society (LTHS) is inviting writers of all ages and backgrounds to weave tales of Los Angeles’ vibrant Little Tokyo neighborhood through its 12th annual Imagine Little Tokyo short story contest.

Whether your story unfolds in the bustling present, echoes through the past, or envisions a future Little Tokyo, the contest seeks fictional narratives that capture the essence of this unique community.

“We’re looking for stories that truly embody the spirit of Little Tokyo,” said a representative from LTHS. “Stories that transport readers to its streets, introduce them to its characters, and celebrate its rich cultural tapestry.”

The contest offers categories for English language, Japanese language, and youth (18 and younger) writers. Winning entries in each category will receive a $500 cash prize and the honor of having their stories published on both the Discover nikkei and Little Tokyo Historical Society websites.

A special hybrid awards ceremony, featuring dramatic readings of the winning stories, is planned for 2025 at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM).

Local writer Maya Tanaka is one aspiring storyteller excited about the contest. “I’ve always loved Little Tokyo,” she shared.”It feels like such a unique part of Los Angeles. I’m thinking of writing a story about a young woman who reconnects with her Japanese heritage through the vibrant community and culture of Little Tokyo.”

The deadline to submit your story is February 28, 2025, at midnight Pacific time. Local Storyteller Competition highlights Vibrant Little Tokyo Culture

Anna: hey, did you hear about that writing contest happening in Little Tokyo?

Ben: No, really? What’s it all about?

Anna: It’s called the Imagine Little Tokyo story contest. The Little Tokyo past Society is hosting it for the 12th year running.

Ben: wow, that’s pretty cool! What kind of stories are they looking for?

Anna: Basically, any fictional story that captures the heart of Little Tokyo, past, present, or future. They want narratives that really showcase the neighborhood’s unique culture and spirit.

Ben: That sounds interesting. Are there any specific categories?

Anna: Yep,they have categories for English and Japanese language writers,plus a special one for writers 18 and under.

Ben: That’s awesome! So, what happens too the winning stories?

ben: Me too! I hear it’s got the best sushi in L.A.!

Anna: Ha! Well, maybe your story could be about a sushi chef on a quest to find the perfect ingredients.

Ben: [Laughing] Now you’re talking! Maybe I will give it a shot.

Anna: You should! It would be great to see some fresh perspectives on Little Tokyo. Plus, the website says they’re looking for contributions to support the contest, so maybe I’ll donate a little.

Ben: Sounds like a good cause.
