IMAX Names Heather Morgan Head of Global Distribution, Craig Dehmel Exits

IMAX has tapped Heather Morgan as its new Head of Global Distribution, the company announced. Morgan, formerly Chief Content Officer at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, will oversee the curation of IMAX’s extensive theatrical releases worldwide. This move comes as Craig Dehmel, the longstanding Head of Global Distribution, departs after nine years with the large format exhibitor.
During Dehmel’s tenure, IMAX experienced its best years at the global box office.he is credited with optimizing IMAX screens for multiple tentpole releases during peak holiday seasons and more than doubling the number of films, events, and experiences programmed annually, including a significant expansion into local language releases. IMAX distribution and global box office success are key for the company.
Morgan will be based in IMAX’s Playa Vista office, reporting to Chief Content Officer Jonathan Fischer. Steve Garrett will continue as Head of Domestic Distribution and take on the expanded role of Head of Option Content for IMAX. The company is focused on IMAX theatrical releases and further expanding its content offerings.
“Heather has a proven ability to wield data,creativity,and audience insights in developing programming strategies that resonate with audiences,” Fischer said.
Fischer added that Morgan’s expertise will be crucial as demand for the IMAX Experience increases and the content portfolio expands to over 130 films and events annually. Morgan’s background includes executive roles at Harkins Theatres and AMC Entertainment. She also chairs the Board of Directors for the Will Rogers Motion Pictures Pioneers Foundation.
“IMAX has taken its position as the gold standard in immersive entertainment to the next level in recent years, and yet so much more potential remains as filmmakers and creators around the world line up to create for this platform,” Morgan said.
Morgan also oversaw film curation,studio partnerships,and business growth at Alamo Drafthouse,including collaboration on the company’s acquisition by Sony Pictures Entertainment. Her experience in film curation and distribution will be valuable to IMAX.
