IMMAF Strengthens Safety Measures: Daniyal Shamkhalov Takes the Helm as New Lead Protection Officer
Daniyal Shamkhalov Appointed as IMMAF’s Lead Safeguarding Officer
Daniyal Shamkhalov, a 25-year-old former IMMAF athlete, has been appointed as the Lead Safeguarding Officer for the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF). Shamkhalov attended the IMMAF Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi as part of the Safeguarding staff and will now lead IMMAF’s approach to safeguarding for future events.
Shamkhalov, a graduate of Uppsala Universitet with a Master’s in Law, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His background as a Youth Corrections Officer at the government agency Statens Institutionsstyrelse and as an MMA promoter at the FRC, demonstrates his skill set and ability to thrive in this new position.
As a former IMMAF athlete, Shamkhalov won two IMMAF European bronze medals and a World Cup Bronze medal representing the Swedish National Team. His experience as an athlete will undoubtedly inform his approach to safeguarding and ensure that the needs of athletes are at the forefront of IMMAF’s policies and procedures.
“I am excited about this opportunity,” said Shamkhalov. “With my background, I work in a Youth correctional facility in Sweden for a government institution, in a serious department with children who have serious physiological problems and behavioral problems. It is a very challenging environment and it has taught me so much about how the children’s well-being is supposed to be maintained even in stressful and challenging environments. I’m going to take all my knowledge and use it here at IMMAF.”
“I’m also a former athlete so it all blends together really well and it feels like I’m where I need to be.”
“I’m a strong believer that if we do everything right, scrutiny is something we should be able to deal with. We should be able to explain and defend every single decision we make.”
Shamkhalov’s Experience at the World Youth Championships
Speaking on the safeguarding at the World Youth Championships, Shamkhalov said:
“At the World Youth Championships, I have been learning and observing.”
“In terms of everything working (Safeguarding at the World Youth Championships), it has been a success. In terms of standardizing it, it’s been 50/50 because there’s so much more I want to improve and implement.”
“In terms of a safeguarding role it may be a long-term deterrent, but events are going to happen. It’s our job to come up with the right course of action because of these events and this tournament can say we’ve been doing it.”
