Impact of Poor Air Quality on Eye Health: Tips for Protection

Impact of Poor Air Quality on Eye Health: Tips for Protection

November 21, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Poor Air Quality Causes Surge in Eye Problems

Recent reports indicate that air quality in Delhi has worsened, moving from ‘severe’ to ‘very poor’. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 379, with areas like Chandani Chowk and IGI Airport showing AQI readings between 338 and 394. However, regions like Anand Vihar and Wazirpur are still over 400, falling into the ‘severe’ category.

Experts warn that this declining air quality is leading to increased cases of dry eyes and allergic reactions in both children and adults. Dr. Rohit Saxena from AIIMS New Delhi explains that pollution poses a significant threat to ocular health, affecting the conjunctiva and cornea. Pollutants like fine particulate matter can irritate the eyes, making them more vulnerable to infections.

Common symptoms of pollution-related eye issues include:

  • Itching
  • Watering
  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Soreness

In severe cases, air pollution can lead to pain or blurred vision, necessitating medical attention. Dr. Smriti Goel from Max Super Speciality Hospital recommends some protective measures:

  1. Use lubricating drops to maintain eye moisture.
  2. Apply cold compresses to alleviate irritation.
  3. Wear glasses or sunglasses to protect against dust and air pollutants.
  4. For allergy sufferers, anti-allergic eye drops and timely treatment are crucial.

Tips to Protect Your Eyes

  1. Wear Protective Eyewear: Use wraparound sunglasses or goggles to shield your eyes from dust and debris.
  2. Stay Indoors During High Pollution: Limit outdoor activities during peak pollution hours to reduce exposure.
  3. Use Artificial Tears: Apply preservative-free lubricating eye drops to keep your eyes moist and flush out irritants.
  4. Maintain Indoor Air Quality: Use air purifiers and keep windows closed to limit outdoor pollutants.
  5. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: This can worsen irritation. Wash your hands frequently.
  6. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support tear production and eye moisture.

By following these guidelines, individuals can better protect their eyes from the harmful effects of poor air quality.
