Impact of Texas Bible Curriculum on Houston School Districts: Will They Adopt It?
Texas Bible Curriculum in Houston-Area Schools
Texas recently approved a Bible-based curriculum for elementary schools. KHOU 11 News contacted several school districts in the Houston area to learn their plans regarding this new material.
The curriculum is optional for schools. If schools choose to adopt it, they will receive extra funding. The new materials might be in classrooms by next school year.
The Texas Education Agency created this curriculum after a law was passed in 2023. This legislation instructs the agency to develop instructional materials that include lessons primarily from Christianity for grades K-5. Critics argue this focus may exclude students of other faiths and could clash with the First Amendment.
Here’s what some local school districts said:
- Klein ISD: Does not use Bluebonnet Learning material.
- Cy-Fair ISD: Does not use it and has not reviewed the new curriculum.
- Katy ISD: Plans to review the state-approved material before making any decisions.
KHOU 11 News is still awaiting replies from other districts, including:
- Houston ISD
- Alief ISD
- Spring Branch ISD
- Aldine ISD
- Spring ISD
- Sheldon ISD
- Channelview ISD
- Galena Park ISD
- Tomball ISD
- Humble ISD
- Pasadena ISD
Additionally, Governor Greg Abbott has publicly supported the introduction of these instructional materials.
