Impact of Trump’s Immigration Plans on Texas Construction Industry and Undocumented Workers

Impact of Trump’s Immigration Plans on Texas Construction Industry and Undocumented Workers

November 23, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Concerns Over Mass Deportations in Texas

President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants have raised alarms in Texas. Many in the business sector, especially in construction, worry that mass deportations could disrupt vital industries. Stan Marek, CEO of a major construction company, warned, “We wouldn’t finish our highways, we wouldn’t finish our schools. Housing would disappear.”

Despite tough immigration policies, Texas continues to grow rapidly. Major cities regularly top lists of the fastest-growing areas in the U.S. A significant portion of the construction workforce is made up of undocumented immigrants. In 2022, over half a million immigrants worked in construction, with nearly 60% being undocumented, according to a report by the American Immigration Council.

Economist Ray Perryman pointed out that Texas needs immigrant labor due to its growing economy. He emphasized the impracticality of mass deportations, noting there are more undocumented workers in Texas than unemployed residents. With low birth rates and population growth, Perryman warned that the state struggles to maintain a sustainable workforce.

While some Texas Republicans support Trump’s deportation plans, others see the potential for economic disruption. Veronica Carrasco, an undocumented immigrant and house painter, expressed her fears about deportation. She has had tough discussions with her children, who are concerned about being separated from her.

As Trump prepares to implement his agenda, there is speculation that he may revise his plans once in office. Marek believes the situation could motivate Congress to pass meaningful immigration reforms. He suggested a guest-worker program as a compromise. This system could provide legal status to immigrants after background checks and fees, benefiting both sides of the political spectrum.

Recently, Trump has reiterated his commitment to mass deportations, indicating he may use military support to assist in the process. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expressed readiness to support Trump’s administration in enforcing immigration policies and deportations.
