Fantasy Flight Games has announced the release of a new edition of its Star Wars: Imperial Assault board game, bringing the tactical combat experience to a modernized format for 2-5 players. The updated version, designed for both longtime fans and newcomers, retains the core gameplay of rebel insurgents facing off against Imperial forces while incorporating refined mechanics and updated components. The announcement, made through official channels on April 18, 2026, confirms that the game will be available in retail stores and online beginning June 15, 2026.

Imperial Assault originally launched in 2014 as a hybrid board game and miniature wargame set in the Star Wars universe during the Galactic Civil War era. Players take on the roles of either Rebel Alliance operatives or Imperial commanders, engaging in scenario-based missions that blend tactical combat with narrative-driven objectives. The game features modular board tiles, detailed miniature figures, and a companion app that manages enemy AI and mission progression in its campaign mode.

The new edition preserves the dual-mode structure that has defined the game since its debut: a skirmish mode for competitive, head-to-head battles and a campaign mode for cooperative storytelling. In campaign mode, one player controls the Imperial forces while up to four others collaborate as Rebel heroes, progressing through a series of interconnected missions that unfold like a serialized adventure. Skirmish mode, by contrast, pits two players against each other in balanced, point-based army builds focused purely on tactical combat.

Fantasy Flight Games confirmed that the updated release includes revised rulebooks with clarified language, improved component quality, and updated miniature sculpts for key characters such as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Han Solo. The game’s companion app, which handles mission scripting, enemy behavior, and dice rolling in campaign play, has also been optimized for current iOS and Android platforms. All existing expansions and content from the original release will remain compatible with the new edition, ensuring continuity for collectors and long-term players.

The re-release comes amid renewed interest in tabletop adaptations of major film and television franchises, particularly those tied to the Star Wars saga. With recent Disney+ series such as Andor and The Acolyte expanding the lore of the Rebellion and the rise of the Empire, Imperial Assault offers fans a way to engage with that era through interactive gameplay. Industry analysts note that licensed board games have seen steady growth in the hobby market, with Star Wars titles consistently ranking among the top performers in both sales and community engagement.

Fantasy Flight Games, a subsidiary of Asmodee North America, has not announced any changes to the game’s licensing agreement with Lucasfilm, which remains in effect. The company emphasized that the new edition is not a redesign or reboot but rather a refined version of the original experience, intended to improve accessibility without altering the core identity of the game. Pre-orders for the updated Imperial Assault are now available through major hobby retailers and the Fantasy Flight Games website.
