Senior Day at New Mexico Capitol Highlights Issues Facing Aging Population
– Senior Day at the New Mexico State Capitol, also known as the Roundhouse in Santa Fe, drew a large crowd of older adults, advocates, and policymakers today, focusing attention on the needs and contributions of the state’s aging population.
The event, hosted by the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department, provided a platform for attendees to advocate for policies supporting seniors, connect with valuable resources, and promote community engagement. The day’s schedule included check-in and refreshments beginning at 8:30 AM, followed by a resource fair at 9:00 AM. Legislative tours of the Roundhouse were scheduled for 10:00 AM, and speakers addressing Senior Day were set to appear in the Rotunda at 11:00 AM. Speakers addressing African American Day were also scheduled to appear in the Rotunda at 12:00 PM.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her support for the event, stating on social media, “It was great to see so many of my senior friends in the Roundhouse today! We’ve been working hard to improve the lives of seniors in New Mexico since my first day in office and we have more to do.”
Senior Day at the Legislature is considered a vital annual event, highlighting the importance of seniors in shaping the future of New Mexico. Attendees had the opportunity to meet with legislators and engage in conversations about senior care and support. Organizations dedicated to improving the lives of older adults across the state were also present.
The event aims to empower older adults to share their voices and address critical issues impacting their well-being. Advocates emphasized the need for policies that address the unique challenges faced by New Mexico’s senior citizens. The Roundhouse, a prominent landmark in Santa Fe, served as the backdrop for these important discussions.
Group registration for legislative tours was closed, but individuals were encouraged to participate by utilizing the RSVP link provided by the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department. The event was designed to be accessible to seniors traveling from across the state, with accommodations made for senior centers organizing group transportation.
The New Mexico State Capitol, often referred to as the Roundhouse, has been praised by visitors as a beautiful and worthwhile destination. The building itself is a focal point for civic engagement and legislative activity in the state.
The focus on senior issues comes as New Mexico, like many states, faces a growing aging population. Advocates hope that the conversations and connections made during Senior Day will translate into tangible improvements in the lives of seniors throughout the state. The event underscores the commitment of state leaders to addressing the needs of this important demographic.
In 2020, Governor Lujan Grisham launched the “New Mexico Grown” initiative, reportedly aimed at supporting seniors, according to a recent Facebook post.
