Impunity Continues: Sara Duterte’s Outrage Highlights Duterte Dynasty’s Legal Defiance

Impunity Continues: Sara Duterte’s Outrage Highlights Duterte Dynasty’s Legal Defiance

Duterte’s Family Behavior Criticized by Civil Society

Vice President Sara Duterte‘s anger over her chief of staff’s detention has sparked criticism. Civil society groups argue that this behavior shows the Duterte family’s belief that they are above the law.

Groups noted Duterte’s reactions, including breaking House rules and making violent statements. Former Senator Leila de Lima said, “It’s all about impunity. They act like overlords.” De Lima announced the launch of the Duterte Panagutin Network, which aims to hold the family accountable for actions during the drug war and beyond.

The coalition’s launch aligns with what organizers see as Duterte’s persistent disregard for authority, particularly in her intervention regarding her aide’s detainment.

De Lima criticized Duterte’s excessive complaints about her aide’s brief detention, comparing it to her own experience of being jailed for years without such public outcry. Teddy Casiño, a former congressman, noted this behavior mirrors that of her father, Rodrigo Duterte.

Both Casiño and De Lima call for an end to the Dutertes’ chaotic influence in the government. Casiño warned that failing to hold Rodrigo Duterte accountable empowers Sara to repeat similar actions.

Duterte recently made threatening remarks against political opponents during a press conference, later claiming they were hypothetical due to her fears for safety. The Department of Justice is now investigating her comments, with potential charges forthcoming.

Critics highlight a double standard in law enforcement. Karapatan Secretary-General Cristina Palabay pointed out that individuals like teacher Ronnel Mas faced severe consequences for expressing discontent while Duterte appears unpunished for her threats.

Lawyer Dino de Leon warned that not prosecuting the Dutertes could lead to further issues with leadership and governance. Advocates like Krissy Conti assert that justice must prevail despite systemic failures.

The volunteer coalition plans to meet again on December 7, before International Human Rights Day, to continue advocating for change.

Duterte’s Drug War Background

Rodrigo Duterte faced international scrutiny for his admission of ordering killings during his presidency. Under his administration, thousands died in police operations with estimates varying widely. Sara Duterte is also implicated in these actions, with ongoing investigations regarding her role during her mayoral term.

The legacy of violence and impunity persists, leaving advocates and victims’ families calling for real accountability and justice in the Philippines.
