Jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan was transferred from Adiala prison to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad following a Supreme Court order, according to statements from his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and independent reporting by Deutsche Welle. The transfer of the 73-year-old politician took place after a medical team examined him at the Rawalpindi facility and noted health concerns, including high blood pressure, palpitations, and anxiety.
Supreme Court Orders Medical Transfer After Prison Health Examination
The Supreme Court of Pakistan issued an order directing authorities to move Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days, following a petition filed by his lawyers citing deteriorating health, according to Deutsche Welle. A medical team examined the former prime minister at Adiala jail, where they recorded high blood pressure, palpitations, and anxiety.
Imran Khan has been jailed since 2023 following his conviction on multiple legal charges, which he maintains are politically motivated. His lawyers and party officials have repeatedly voiced concern over his condition behind bars, stating previously that he has lost most of the vision in his right eye.
Party Reaction and Legal Background
Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, a close Khan aide, issued a statement regarding the decision.

It’s a very welcome order and we wish it had happened sooner so his eye and general health would not have deteriorated this much.
Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari
Bukhari added that Khan should remain hospitalized until all doctors are satisfied. A spokesperson for Khan indicated that the former prime minister is expected to stay at the Islamabad medical facility until September 16.
Khan served as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 until his ouster in a no-confidence vote in 2022. Late last year, he and his wife were convicted on charges including unlawful marriage and corruption, resulting in a 17-year prison sentence. Both individuals have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
