pharmacists on the Front lines: Optimizing Elranatamab Therapy for Multiple Myeloma

Toronto, Canada – At the 22nd annual International Myeloma Society (IMS) meeting, held recently⁣ in⁢ Toronto, key insights emerged regarding the crucial role of ‍pharmacists in managing patients receiving elranatamab,⁣ a promising⁢ therapy for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Matthew Lei,‍ PharmD, BCOP, a⁢ clinical pharmacy specialist at Massachusetts ‍General Hospital, shed light on these considerations in an interview with⁤ Pharmacy Times®.

Elranatamab, particularly when used as consolidated therapy following CAR T-cell therapy, offers the potential for deeper responses ⁣and sustained ‍remission in patients with this challenging disease. However, its effective and safe use hinges on careful management of potential side effects and⁤ proactive supportive care.

Dr. Lei emphasized several critical areas where pharmacists can make a ⁢significant impact:

* Infection Prophylaxis: Patients receiving elranatamab are at increased risk of infection. Pharmacists play a ‍vital role in ensuring appropriate prophylactic strategies are in place to minimize this risk.
* CRS and ICANS Mitigation: Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) ⁣and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) are potential complications associated with T-cell engagers like elranatamab. Pharmacists are essential in monitoring for early signs and symptoms of these toxicities and implementing appropriate mitigation strategies in collaboration with the medical team.
* Supportive Care and Outpatient ⁤management: Beyond managing specific toxicities, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive supportive ⁢care, including managing pain, nausea, and other ⁤common side effects. They also play a‍ crucial⁤ role in‍ educating patients⁣ and caregivers about elranatamab therapy, ensuring adherence, and facilitating ‍seamless transitions to outpatient management.

Dr.Lei’s presentation at ⁤IMS underscored the feasibility⁢ of using‍ consolidated therapy with T-cell engagers like elranatamab after CAR T-cell therapy. this approach holds the promise⁣ of achieving more profound and⁤ durable remissions in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, offering renewed hope for improved outcomes.

the insights shared by Dr. Lei ‍highlight the expanding role of pharmacists in oncology care. By actively engaging in patient counseling, monitoring
