IMSS Coahuila: Over 12,000 Vaccinated Against HPV This Year
Coahuila, Mexico – The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in coahuila is urging residents to take advantage of free HPV vaccinations available at Units of Family Medicine (UMF) and General Zone Hospitals (HGZ) and SubZone (HGSZ) across the state. This push is part of a nationwide campaign launched in September, aiming to protect against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
“We encourage everyone eligible to visit their nearest clinic and get vaccinated,” said Jesús Armando Seca Rivas, a public health nurse with IMSS Coahuila. “This vaccine is crucial in preventing HPV-related illnesses.”
The vaccine is available to girls in fifth grade or 11 years old who are not in school, as well as men and women aged 11 to 49 living with HIV. Additionally, girls and women aged 9 to 19 who have experienced sexual assault and adolescents who have never received the vaccine are eligible.
This year alone,IMSS Coahuila has administered over 12,000 HPV vaccines. Seca Rivas emphasized the importance of vaccinating young women before they become sexually active, as HPV is primarily transmitted through sexual contact.
HPV encompasses over 200 related viruses. While some pose a low risk, others can led to serious health issues. High-risk HPV types can cause various cancers, including cervical, anal, and throat cancer.
“The IMSS is committed to working with the health sector to prevent HPV infection through vaccination,” Seca Rivas stated. “We strive to increase the number of protected individuals each year.”
