A Touch of Paris in the Heart of New York: Designer Creates Dream Townhouse
(New York, NY) – Step inside a Manhattan townhouse that feels more like a Parisian pied-à-terre. Designer Robert Sofield has transformed a classic New york brownstone into a haven of timeless elegance, blending early 20th-century French glamour with modern functionality.
The result is a stunning mix of Sofield’s interpretation of early 20th-century French glamour with practical touches. Dual Art Deco-style armoires, for example, cleverly conceal scooters and sporting equipment, keeping the space clutter-free.
Treasures abound throughout the townhouse.1940s dining room chairs attributed to the artist and furniture designer Maurice Jallot add a touch of Parisian chic, while a Napoleon-style secretary desk, dating back to around 1870,graces the entryway. Even the bedroom sconces have a story, salvaged from a decommissioned ocean liner.
Some rooms deviate from the Parisian theme, offering a more contemporary feel. The kitchen, as a notable example, boasts sleek, modern appliances and a minimalist aesthetic. This juxtaposition of styles creates a unique and dynamic living space, reflecting the homeowner’s eclectic taste.Sofield’s design is a testament to the power of thoughtful curation and attention to detail. It’s a space that feels both timeless and utterly unique, a true reflection of its owner’s personality and passions.

Kelly Ripa’s Bathroom Gets a “Mommie Dearest” Makeover
Talk show host Kelly Ripa’s New York City townhouse is known for its stylish blend of classic and contemporary design. But one room stands out for its Hollywood glamour: the main bathroom.
Ripa, a self-proclaimed film buff, channeled her inner movie star when designing the space, drawing inspiration from the iconic 1981 film “Mommie Dearest.”
“There’s an amazing scene where Faye Dunaway, playing Joan Crawford, is lying on a white satin chaise in her dressing room, putting lotion on her elbow,” Ripa told Architectural Digest, playfully reenacting the scene. “I had Bill (Sofield, her interior designer) make me an identical replica of it!”
Ripa insisted on hammered satin for the chaise, but sofield cautioned against the delicate fabric. His concerns proved valid.
“I sat down on the chaise to apply some lotion, kind of as a joke, but when I put my leg down I basically destroyed the entire surface,” Ripa recalled with a laugh.
The chaise was later reupholstered in a more durable cotton silk. “I learned my lesson,” Ripa admitted.
The “Mommie Dearest” chaise is just one example of how ripa infuses her home with personality and a touch of old Hollywood magic.
