International Conference on Conjoined Twins Held in Riyadh
Health ministers, doctors, scientists, and global health officials gathered in Riyadh on November 24, 2024, for the first International Conference on Conjoined Twins. This event aims to improve diagnosis, treatment, and support for conjoined twins worldwide.
The conference is under the patronage of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. It is organized by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) in collaboration with various Saudi ministries. This event coincides with the inaugural World Conjoined Twins Day, recognized by the United Nations due to Saudi Arabia’s efforts to raise awareness.
Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, leader of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme, expressed the commitment of the medical team to their mission. He stated, “We pledge to continue our humanitarian work and leverage our scientific experience to help conjoined twins lead healthy lives.”
The two-day event features sessions with health leaders, keynote addresses, and presentations from experts. Topics include surgical techniques, maternal care, ethical issues, and social inclusion. Notable speakers are Dr. Felice D’Arco from Great Ormond Street Hospital and Professor Olutoyin Olutoye from Lurie Children’s Hospital. The conference hosts over 500 participants, marking a significant effort in the field of conjoined twins care.
This gathering aims to unite various professionals dedicated to improving care and social inclusion for conjoined twins and vulnerable children. The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme has successfully separated 61 pairs since 1990, making it one of the leading programs globally.
As the conference proceeds, it will promote knowledge sharing and best practices, helping to enhance the lives of conjoined twins and their families.
