An incarcerated woman has died from tuberculosis complications following a transfer between Georgia prison facilities, wgxa.tv reported, prompting state officials to launch quarantine and contact tracing protocols. The Georgia Department of Corrections stated that the unidentified woman initially entered state custody at the McRae’s Women’s (Diagnostic) Facility before moving to the Pulaski State Prison.

Medical Hospitalization and Subsequent Death at Pulaski State Prison

After arriving at the Pulaski State Prison, the incarcerated woman became acutely ill and required a transfer to the hospital on October 3, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. By Monday, she had passed away from complications of tuberculosis. wgxa.tv reported that the death has triggered a public health response inside the correctional system.

State corrections officials coordinated with the Department of Public Health to implement infection control measures across the affected facilities. The Georgia Department of Corrections announced that it completed contact tracing. Staff members, incarcerated individuals who experienced exposure, and anyone else requesting a screening will receive medical testing and appropriate healthcare referrals. Quarantines have been established for identified dormitories or other areas within the facility.

The Georgia Department of Corrections takes the health and safety of its staff and offender population seriously. We will continue to take steps to assess potential exposure, ensure appropriate medical evaluation and testing for identified individuals, and implement precautions as recommended by healthcare professionals. Those precautions include contact tracing and mitigation efforts as well as quarantine status for identified dorm(s) or other areas within the facility. Protecting the health and safety of those in our care, our staff and the public remains a priority as we follow all DPH guidelines.
